On 16 October, the Walt Disney Company announced a US-wide initiative to phase out its involvement in the promotion of unhealthy foods to children and the removal of trans-fats from its theme-park menus and licensed and promotional products. The entertainment company stated that its characters and brands will only be used on child-focused products that meet specific guidelines on calories, fat, saturated fat and sugar.
The company will continue licensing deals on confectionery for special occasions, such as birthday cakes and holiday candies, but will limit the number of "indulgence" items in its total food portfolio to 15 percent by 2010.
In addition to the removal of trans fats, from October onwards, children's meals at Disney's US theme- parks are being served with low-fat milk, 100 percent fruit juice or water, along with default side dishes such as apple sauce or carrots in place of French fries and soft drinks.
